Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT Neon Spectacular!
Three questions with Kody Shafer, founder of Neon Spectacular.
Why did you start your business?
I returned from living in Japan in June of this year. My anticipations were completely shattered by COVID, though I am happy to be in my current position. I started my business because there wasn't enough work for me to return to New York City.
I've spent the last 8 years working in neon shops around the globe. I started on Route 66 in New Mexico, moved onto the Big Apple for a number of years, and spent two years working in Osaka, Japan. I'm happy to finally be in business for myself, though I certainly have a lot to learn!
What is your best selling product/service?
I mainly sell custom neon signs to local shops, restaurants, breweries, and collectors. I bend the glass by hand and use atmospheric gasses and electricity to illuminate the tubes. Contrary to belief, they are now quiet, long-lasting, and energy-efficient thanks to modern power supplies.
Have you "reimagined" your small business?
As I've only been in business for a number of months, I can't really say I've "reimagined" my business, although I am making an effort to learn how to be more effective with marketing, sales, organization, etc.
