"The Impressionist Landscape: Dmitri Wright at Weir Farm and Abroad," at the Curtis Gallery

American Impressionist painter Dmitri Wright celebrates the beauty and nuances of the landscape, here and abroad, with works that reflect the light-saturated and form dissolving techniques of traditional Impressionism. "The Impressionist Landscape" opens at New Canaan Library's H. Pelham Curtis Gallery on Thursday, June 2 and runs through Sunday, July 10, 2016.  An opening reception will be held on Thursday, June 2 from 6 -8 p.m. in the Curtis Gallery; all are invited to attend.

A Master Artist/Instructor for the Weir Farm National Historic Site (Ridgefield and Wilton, CT), the only National Park dedicated to painting, Wright shows many paintings from his Weir Farm Plein Air series, including the barns, buildings and landscape that were home to J. Alden Weir. Weir farm was a destination for many well known early 20th century American Impressionists. "The Impressionist Landscape" also presents paintings from Wright's travels abroad; French and Italian landscapes alive with the intensity and fluidity of light unique to areas such as France's Cote d'Azur, and Italy's Umbrian and Tuscan regions.

"I look to enhance natural beauty by bringing forth the transcendent and the invisible of what is occurring below the surface,"  says Weir.

As an American artist, Wright’s travels have taken him to paint and/or teach throughout the United States and to more than a dozen National Park sites. In addition to Italy and France, Wright has painted in Ireland, Austria, England, West Indies, Central and South America, and China. Wright’s work has been exhibited widely in the Northeast and is held in many private, corporate and museum collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, the National Art Museum of Sport, and the Newark Museum.

"The Impressionist Landscape: Dmitri Wright at Weir Farm and Abroad," is sponsored by the Art Committee of New Canaan Library, and is curated by Gwen North Reiss and Eva McCarrick. For additional information please contact Erinn Batykefer at 203.594.5076 or visit newcanaanlibrary.org.
