This past Saturday evening, November 17, at 5PM some 180 parishioners of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church gathered at the church on New Canaan Road in Wilton for a festive celebration. Parishioners were met at the door with glasses of champagne and trays of hearty appetizers. Pictures of the rector as a child (sent from her mother in Maine) were blown up and placed about the room. Other decorations included table flower arrangements of red roses made by the Flower Guild of St. Matthew’s. At 6:00PM a program began with the assisting rector serving as the emcee. He took everyone back to some important events in 2002, the year the rector arrived. Letters of congratulation were read from Senator Blumenthal and the Bishop of Connecticut. Other letters were read from the Queen of England and the Dali Lama. But as these letters were quite humorous there was a question whether they were truly authentic! There were musical events…a solo and new words sung to Mary Grace’s favorite hymn. A look back picture show of the last ten years was shown set to Lady Gaga’s “I Was Born This Way.” Finally, two lay leaders of the parish, Steve Hudspeth and Sharon Pierson, presented the rector with a funny handbag containing a generous monetary purse. There was much laughter throughout the evening, as well as celebration, and reminiscing. To learn more about St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, go to: www.stmatthewswilton.org.
