Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

Meet Pierluigi Mazzella, founder of Fatto a Mano.

About Pierluigi

Born and raised on the beautiful island of Ischia, Italy, Pierluigi Mazzella developed a deep passion for food. Inspired by his father, a professional fisherman who emphasized the importance of buying fresh and local, Pierluigi pursued a culinary education and embarked on a career in the food industry. He gained extensive experience working in pizzerias, restaurants, and artisanal bakeries throughout Italy before moving to the United States in 2017.

Known for his obsession and dedication to baking, Pierluigi recently left his bakery job to run Fatto a Mano full-time. His commitment to quality drives him to constantly research, learn, and experiment, aiming to create products that are full of flavor and personality using the highest quality ingredients. Pierluigi's goal is to share his passion and change perceptions about breads and desserts, encouraging people to enjoy them as part of a healthy diet. In recognition of his excellence, the Connecticut Restaurant Association awarded him the 2022 Baker of the Year.

Why did you start your business?

I’m passionate about artisanal baking!

Best selling product or service?

Artisanal panettone. Fatto a Mano does not use preservatives or stabilizers in any products. Everything is made by hand with natural levain or "Lievito Madre," and the bakery emphasizes using high-quality, local ingredients from Connecticut and New England. Customers are advised to consume products within 1-3 days for the best experience.

Do you use any local businesses to support Fatto a Mano?

All my products have local ingredients for small businesses and local farms including Beaver Brook Farm; Sea Coast Mushrooms and Sunset Farm. You can also find Fatto a Mano at the Ridgefield Farmers Market.

Anything else you want the community to know?

I created my small business from scratch just as I do with the products I sell.

Fatto a Mano is located at 971 Post Road East, Westport.
