Summer Writing Series for Children and Teens at the Rec Center

A week-long summer class inspired by songs written in the 60s and 70s is available this July at Ridgefield Parks and Recreation!

Parents, are you looking for fun (yet educational) activities for your children this summer break, or would your teenager like to strengthen their literary skills in an open environment with their peers? Local creative writing nonprofit Muse Squad will be running The Anthologies, a summer series that combines musical compositions and the study of song lyrics to inspire students as they craft written works of their own.

Each day of the program will consist of one two-hour session, during which participants will listen to and explore the world of a selected song by Joni Mitchell, whose soulful voice and lyrical poetry they will use to generate their own profound metaphors and examine universal themes. The class concludes with a Final Reading and reception to celebrate the works created by each young writer over the course of the week.

The series meets from 4:30-6:30pm Monday through Friday of the program week. It gathers at the home of our Ridgefield Chapter, Ridgefield Parks & Recreation located at 195 Danbury Road, Ridgefield, CT. One session from July 8th-12th is offered for writers ages 8-12, while a second session runs July 22nd-26th for teens 13 and up.

The Anthologies aims to provide a welcoming and supportive environment where children and teens can delve into their creative sides and experiment with a variety of writing styles under the guidance of Miss Brittney and the inspiration of fellow students. Muse Squad encourages writers of all skill levels and offers a variety of age groups in its programs.

Muse Squad was established in 2022 by Ridgefield mom Brittney Richardson, who dedicated herself to improving access to creative writing opportunities for local youth upon first moving to the area with her family. Miss Brittney has a BA in English and MFA in Fiction, and focuses on using her expertise and guidance to foster an exploratory environment where local children and teens can experiment with their literary style and develop a toolkit of important creative writing techniques.

Muse Squad is proud to work with the Ridgefield Parks and Recreation Center in bringing summer creative writing experiences to local young writers. The Parks and Recreation Center has been an integral part of the fabric of Ridgefield and its community for over 20 years, and its mission of providing wellness and recreation to all serves daily to positively shape the lives of many of the town’s youth.
