Spring Class to Inspire Young Writers at Ridgefield Parks & Recreation Center

Creative Writing Class on "At the Back of the North Wind" by George MacDonald

Muse Squad, a premier creative writing program for young writers, is excited to announce an upcoming spring class at the Ridgefield Parks & Recreation Center. In this immersive, literature-based course, students will read, discuss, and engage in creative writing exercises inspired by At the Back of the North Wind, a classic children's novel by Scottish author George MacDonald. The class is designed to inspire young minds to explore the world of fantasy while honing their writing skills.

About the Class: Discovering the Magic of George MacDonald's Work

At the Back of the North Wind, first serialized in 1868 and published in book form in 1871, follows the enchanting adventures of a boy named Diamond and his mystical companion, the North Wind. Throughout the story, Diamond embarks on fantastical journeys through dreamlike landscapes, guided by Lady North Wind, a mysterious and powerful figure. The book blends fantasy, adventure, and allegory elements, offering profound themes that explore life, death, and the nature of kindness.

In this class, students will delve into MacDonald's imaginative world through reading, in-depth discussion, and creative writing prompts designed to spark their own imaginations. Using At the Back of the North Wind as a foundation, students will explore literary devices, develop characters, and craft their own narratives influenced by MacDonald's unique blend of fantasy and moral storytelling. The course is ideal for young writers eager to expand their voices, strengthen their storytelling abilities, and create meaningful narratives.

George MacDonald: A Literary Pioneer

George MacDonald (1824–1905) is widely regarded as a pioneering figure in modern fantasy literature. A poet, author, and Christian minister, MacDonald significantly influenced the world of children's literature. His works, including At the Back of the North Wind, are beloved for their enchanting tales, vivid imagery, and underlying themes of compassion, spiritual growth, and adventure.

MacDonald's influence extended beyond his own writing. He mentored Lewis Carroll, the author

of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and inspired generations of writers, including C.S. Lewis, who referred to MacDonald as his "spiritual father." MacDonald's legacy endures in the hearts of readers and writers alike, and his works continue to captivate and inspire today.
