Ridgefield's Safe and Savvy Driving Workshop Empowers Parents and Teens

Last Monday, April 29th, the Safe and Savvy Driving Workshop took place, offering valuable insights and practical skills to both parents and teenagers. Spearheaded by Ridgefield resident and founder of Bluebird International Aya van Zanten and hosted by the Ridgefield Driving School, owner Mark Cyphers and Pamby Motors, the workshop aimed to enhance participants' driving knowledge and skills, addressing various real-world scenarios and safety concerns on the road.

In attendance was First Selectman Rudy Marconi who participated in the fun experience-based introductory questions led by van Zanten.

Cyphers engaged the audience with insightful statistics and practical tips. He discussed crucial topics such as driving in challenging conditions like snow and ice, dealing with large animals on the road, and navigating short on-ramps on the highway.

Captain Raines from the Ridgefield Police Department provided valuable insights on managing road rage, steps to take in the event of an accident, and guidelines for interacting with law enforcement during a traffic stop.

Attendees received demonstrations on changing a tire, checking oil levels, jump-starting a car, and understanding the components under the hood. Safety aspects such as tire tread and pressure were also emphasized.

“We hope that all participants came away from this workshop feeling more confident and driving more safely on the road,” said van Zanten.

Tim Pambianchi of Pamby Motors who also serves as Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department, concluded the evening with a session on practical car mechanics.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with one parent stating, "My son and I took a lot from the 'Safe and Savvy Driving' class. He is a new driver, and even though he had heard some of the material before, he told me that it was really beneficial to hear it repeated and that the new material was eye-opening to him. All in all, a great program that we would strongly recommend to all new (and not so new!) drivers."

Another participant expressed gratitude, saying, "Your efforts truly made it a memorable experience for everyone involved."

The workshop not only provided practical skills but also instilled a sense of responsibility and respect for the machinery they operate. One attendee noted, "That was the first time I have seen a tire change, and while I do not intend to do it, I am relieved to know that I could do it if I had to! It also helped the kids understand that they are driving a machine and it takes knowledge and care and common sense!"

In addition to Caraluzzi's who graciously provided refreshments, each student received a life hammer to take home, encouraging safety and preparedness for their journeys ahead!

The expert presenters, who generously volunteered their time, expressed their willingness to participate in the Safe and Savvy Driving Workshop again!
