Gary Cohen gives commencement address at Seton Hall, receives Honorary Degree

Ridgefield resident and NY Mets play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen wasted no time after wrapping up his duties calling last night's game against the Cleveland Guardians. He boarded a plane, heading to a place close to his heart—Seton Hall University.

This time, Cohen's visit to Seton Hall wasn't about sport’s broadcasting. Instead, he went to deliver the commencement keynote address at the university, where he has been the voice of Seton Hall basketball on the radio since 2003.

One of the most highly respected sportscasters in the country, Gary Cohen, displayed his humility right from the start. “I have been incredibly privileged to have a relationship with Seton Hall University that has stretched into its third decade. I was brought here by Keith Meyers and Jeff Fogelson to be the voice of Seton Hall basketball on the radio, and I have relished every moment I have spent in that role."

The Mets Hall of Fame and New York State Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, and three-time finalist for the Ford C. Frick, Cohen today received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Seton Hall University. “The feeling of warmth and community that emanates from this place and these people has changed my life forever,” he said.

Gary Cohen addressed the Seton Hall graduates during the 168th Baccalaureate Commencement, acknowledging the unique challenges their generation has faced. He emphasized that their path has not been easy, highlighting the significant events they've endured, including being born in the aftermath of 9/11, having family members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and experiencing the impact of the Great Recession. Cohen noted that these hardships were compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted their lives once again. Despite these adversities, he praised the graduates for their perseverance and resilience, celebrating their achievements. He concluded by stating that while they should be proud of their accomplishments, their greatest test is still ahead.

Cohen closed out his speech with this quote: “Remember that approximately 100% of the time, the people who are best at what they do don’t need to brag. Go achieve, and let the world sing your praises.” And then... "May your wildest dreams come true!"
