Superintendent Dr. William Collins has placed three Ridgefield High School varsity baseball coaches on administrative leave in the aftermath of last weekend's fire at Governor Park Baseball Field. Dr. Collins notified parents and the school community about this decision today.
Police are currently investigating the incident and encourage any persons involved to call them at 203) 438-6531. First Selectman Rudy Marconi also asks that those involved contact him at 203-431-2700.
The letter reads:
Dear Ridgefield parents: As you are likely aware, a situation developed on Saturday morning that resulted in damage to the baseball field at Governor Park. We are working with the Ridgefield Police Department and will cooperate fully as they investigate this incident. I never like to speculate, but rather provide factual information.
At this time, we know:
1. Individuals poured what is believed to be gasoline on the baseball field and ignited it.
At this point, we do not believe the coaching staff was directly involved; however, out of an abundance of caution, the three varsity coaches have been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the police investigation.
Anyone who witnessed this event on Saturday should call the Ridgefield Police Department 203) 438-6531 and provide a statement.
First Selectman Rudy Marconi reports that the cleanup and restoration of the Governor Park Baseball Field will cost approximately $45,000. Thirty thousand in costs have already been incurred due to excavation, removal and disposal of contaminated soil. He does not believe the Ridgefield taxpayers should be held fiscally responsible for the incident.
