Easter is tomorrow and I thought we would visit some of our favorite literary bunnies. These stories are all favorites in my house and are read throughout the year.
"Tom Rabbit" by Martin Waddell
Tom Rabbit is Sammy's beloved stuffed toy. One afternoon, Sammy forgets Tom Rabbit outside. The story is told from Tom's perspective, and we see the outside world and animals as a stuffed animal might view them. Check out this story to see what happens to Tom Rabbit when he meets "real" rabbits.
"The Tale of Peter Rabbit" by Beatrix Potter
I love everything Beatrix Potter. This is the story of a young rabbit and his adventure in Mr. McGregor's garden. The story addresses consequences for one's actions and being brave when one is scared. The illustrations make the book one of the prettiest children's books.
"The Tale of Benjamin Bunny" by Beatrix Potter
This story continues the adventures of Peter Rabbit with his cousin Benjamin Bunny. In this story, Peter and Benjamin go on their own adventure that again involves Mr. McGregor's garden and a big cat that traps them under a basket. Will Mr. McGregor capture Peter and Benjamin?
"The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams
I still can't read this book without it bringing a tear to my eye. This is the story of a beloved stuffed animal who learns what it means to be "real." This book is filled with words of wisdom on being loved and being beautiful in the eyes of the person who loves you.
“Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" - Margery Willams
"The Knuffle Bunny" books by Mo Willems
We love all three of these books. Willems tells the story of a beloved bunny. My youngest adores these books. The author combines illustrations and photos to integrate an illustrated story in a real world setting, making these books among my favorite children's books.
