SoNo's Oishi Sushi & Izakaya Celebrates 10th Anniversary Under New Ownership

Oishi Sushi & Izakaya, a beloved fixture in South Norwalk’s vibrant dining scene, is gearing up to celebrate its 10th anniversary in October 2024. Located in the historic Washington Street District, Oishi has long been known for its upscale take on Japanese cuisine, blending traditional flavors with modern touches. The restaurant was originally opened in 2014 by Chris Chen, who introduced the community to an elevated dining experience featuring creative cocktails, local craft beers, Asian-inspired entrees, and house-made desserts.

Now, as the restaurant reaches this milestone, it does so under new ownership. Vicky Gao, owner of Osaka Restaurant in Queens, NY, and the team of Peter Lu and Hui Lin, owners of Chochosan Sushi and Hibachi and Chochosan Noodle House in Nanuet, NY, have taken the reins. They are committed to preserving Oishi’s stellar reputation while also infusing their own unique touches, drawing from their extensive experience in the Japanese culinary scene.

Signature Dishes and Menu Highlights

The menu at Oishi remains a highlight, with signature sushi art and specialty rolls crafted from market-fresh, sushi-grade fish. Standout dishes include:

  • Yellowtail Sashimi with jalapeño and yuzu ponzu
  • Incredible Roll: A combination of tuna and avocado topped with tuna, salmon, eel, tempura crunch, tobiko, and eel sauce
  • Oishi Roll: Featuring tuna, yellowtail, salmon, avocado, and asparagus, topped with seared tuna, salmon, scallion, tobiko, spicy mayo, and eel sauce

In addition to sushi, the appetizer menu tempts with options like crispy duck spring rolls, pan-seared dumplings, and Angus beef stuffed wontons with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Entrées range from pan-seared sesame-crusted tuna steak with sautéed soba noodles and vegetables to Oishi Surf and Turf, which pairs grilled NY strip steak with jumbo shrimp in a garlic shallot teriyaki sauce.

For those seeking comforting bowls, Oishi’s offerings like shrimp and chicken pad Thai noodles and the Big Bowl Ramen, with a rich miso broth and your choice of chicken, pork, or shrimp, are sure to satisfy.

Innovative Beverage Program

Oishi’s beverage program is equally impressive, featuring an array of Japanese whiskey, sake, and craft cocktails, alongside Asian beers and global wines. Popular choices include the Blue Ocean Bowl for 2, a tropical mix of light rum, passion fruit vodka, peach schnapps, blue curacao, and pineapple juice, and the Oishi Saketini, a sophisticated blend of premium vodka, sake, and blue curacao.

Open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday, Oishi continues to be a staple in South Norwalk, offering an inviting atmosphere and an unforgettable dining experience.
