This is post is not sponsored, however, dinner and overnight accommodations were provided by the Saybrook Point Inn in Old Saybrook, CT. All opinions are my own.
“This isn't a dream, it's Fenwick… or is it paradise?
Hollywood legend Katharine Hepburn adored her hometown of Old Saybrook, and after visiting, I can truly see why.
Located on the Connecticut shoreline (approximately 2 hours from New York City), Old Saybrook is also the birthplace of Yale University, but is renowned for its active summering and seafaring community.
The grand Hepburn estate, situated in posh Fenwick, a borough of Old Saybrook, was Ms. Hepburn's refuge from the demands of her career, and where she ultimately chose to retire after her last film. Aside from Katharine's magnificent mansion, there is simply no better place to stay in the area than the Saybrook Point Inn. Every factor of our time in town was interwoven with the inn, its staff, and their recommendations.
The inn is comprised of a main building, two guesthouses, and the incredibly romantic Lighthouse Suite (open seasonally) with 360 views of the Long Island Sound. The Inn's guesthouses, Tall Tales and Three Stories, provide a cozier experience similar to a B&B with with the incredible added bonus of the extraordinary concierge that is Mrs. Pratt, who is easily the best part of staying at either house.
If you're looking for a perfect staycation location that will truly provide some rest and relaxation, here is a proposed itinerary for your time in Old Saybrook that is approved by both Mrs. Pratt and Ms. Hepburn.
Friday:
I recommend arriving on a Friday evening, checking in, after settling in your room, set the tone for the relaxing getaway by enjoying a treatment at the Inn’s Sanno spa. The spa features 11 total service rooms and Swiss showers, and a relaxation room with fireplace.
By this point you should be hungry, and Fresh Salt (also located at the Inn) is truly fantastic. There is always fresh, seasonal and local cuisine on the ever changing menu, and there are stunning views of the Long Island Sound to be seen while you dine. Sip cocktails at sunset on the Fire Bar on the terrace, and after dinner, order chocolate chip cookies to go to enjoy in your room (with a bottle of wine you brought because you are SO smart :)
Grab a quick breakfast in the guest house, and take advantage of the Inn’s free bike rentals. Your bike ride should being across the street to Fort Saybrook Monument Park. This 17-acre park depicts the history of Saybrook Colony, and offers panoramic views of mouth of Connecticut River.
Next, take a ride over the Old Saybrook Causeway, and follow Ms. Hepburn's advice, “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” , and ride to The Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse, which, technically isn't allowed.
After that adventure, have a chat with Mrs. Pratt, and enjoy some down time in your room playing pool, chess, or sitting on the balcony taking in the sea views.
Then, enjoy dinner downtown at any of the Inn’s recommended restaurants: Red Hen, Liv's Oyster Bar, Alforno, Apsen, or the more casual Penny Lane Pub. Post dinner, enjoy evening entertainment at The Kate, a performing arts center located in historic former town hall on Main Street. The theater is open year round (there are some amazing acts coming this winter), seats 250 and has a charming museum honoring Ms. Hepburn.
After the show, most businesses will be closed, but since you powered through an 11 mile bike ride, you’ll want to get a good night’s sleep anyway.
Sunday:
Start your lazy Sunday with Brunch at Fresh Salt. Then, if you're brave, take a dip in the outdoor salt water pool (open year round) or, stay inside and enjoy the indoor pool, saunas, and hot tubs.
After showering, and packing, begrudgingly check out and say goodbye to the amazing staff, but promise to return (just as I did).
If you're looking for a winter getaway, join the Saybrook Point Inn for their fourth annual Fire & Ice Festival on Saturday, January 14, 2017. The event is open to the public will provide activities for all ages. It's a great excuse to spend some time outdoors and warm up with a cocktail, or hot cocoa. The festival begins at noon until 5 p.m. For more information, visit the event page.
