The Fitness Studio in Ridgefield plans Spin-a-thon in memory of Newtown's Grace McDonnell

A seven-year old girl named Grace. Spin for Grace logoA life cut tragically short. A warm, engaging smile that reminds us of our own children and asks us to hold each day dear. A community searching for a way to reach out and support a family that has experienced an unthinkable loss. Theses are the reasons for the upcoming Spin-a-thon at The Fitness Studio in memory of Newtown’s Grace McDonnell.

The “Spin for Grace” is an effort by two women who were both raised in Ridgefield. Spin teacher, Katherine McGerald and owner of Ridgefield Studio of Performing Arts and The Fitness Center, Jessica Mancini wanted to do something to honor and celebrate the life of Grace McDonnell and are holding a morning spin-a-thon on March 16th to benefit her family’s designated fund.

“I felt a connection to the family because we had so much in common,” Katherine McGerald said. “Grace’s father is a triathlete, as is my husband. We spend time on Martha’s Vineyard, as does the McDonnell family, and I have a young daughter who has a creative spirit and loves to draw.”

When Katherine brought the idea to Ms. Mancini, she did not hesitate before jumping on board. “We’ve all been so effected by the tragedy of Newtown and know it could have easily been our town.” Mancini said. “Being able to honor a fellow artist as Grace McDonnell and allow others to channel their sadness into action is a good feeling.”

Other local businesses and organizations have signed on as sponsors including: Bethel Cycle, Ridgefield Bicycle Company, and Run Like a Mother.  Instructors donating their time are Jessica Mancini, Aimee Berger-Girvalo, Ellen Bonheim, Morgan Cotter, Natasha Kowatch, Cindy Tamburri, and Katherine McGerald.  Kristin Healy designed the logo free of charge and Meredith Trotta donated her PR expertise as well.

Organizers are expecting on a large response from the community. Interested residents can sign up in The Fitness Studio or by calling 431-0006. Bike space is limited, so those interested are encouraged to reserve their spots. It is a $25 donation for one hour on a bike or $80 for all four hours. Beyond that, participants are encouraged to raise funds to whatever level they choose. Prizes will be given for the highest fundraiser.

Classes will be offered in spin, Zumba, TRX, and yoga.  There will also be kids yoga and Zumba.  Please go to- www.thefitnessstudio.us for class times and schedules.
