Writers Summer Camp at Village Center for the Arts

Let your writing shine this summer.

It’s that time of year again! Parents, are you looking for fun (yet educational) summer activities for your children this summer break? Local creative writing nonprofit Muse Squad will be running The Anthologies, a week-long summer series that will combine music history and the study of song lyrics to inspire students as they develop a variety of creative writing techniques and craft stories of their own.

Each day of the program will consist of one two-hour session, during which students will listen to and explore the world of a selected song by Joni Mitchell, whose soulful voice and lyrical poetry they will use to produce profound metaphors and examine universal themes in their own works of creative writing. The classes will place particular emphasis on rhythm and emotion, and will conclude with a Final Reading and reception to celebrate the inspired works created by each young writer over the course of the week.

Sessions will meet from 3:30-5:30pm Monday through Friday of the program week, and will be held at Village Center for the Arts (12 Main Street) in New Milford, CT. The program will run from June 24th-28th and will be open to all students aged 8 to 14.

The Anthologies aims to provide a welcoming and supportive environment where children and teens can delve into their creative sides and experiment with a variety of writing styles under the guidance of Miss Brittney and the inspiration of fellow students. No writing experience necessary! Muse Squad welcomes all skill levels and a variety of age groups in its programs.

Muse Squad was established in 2022 by Ridgefield mom Brittney Richardson, who dedicated herself to improving access to creative writing opportunities for local youth upon first moving to the area with her family. Ms. Richardson has a BA in English and MFA in Fiction and aims to use her expertise and guidance to foster an exploratory environment where local children and teens can experiment with their literary style and develop a toolkit of important creative writing techniques.

Muse Squad is proud to work with Village Center for the Arts in bringing summer creative writing experiences to local young writers. Village Center for the Arts has been an integral part of the fabric of New Milford and its community for over 20 years, and its mission of providing educational programs to further artistic creativity and development serves daily to positively shape the lives of many of the town’s youth.
