New Canaan Nature Center Goats Hard at Work Eating Invasive Plants!

Last week New Canaan Nature Center (NCNC) welcomed Chardonnay, Merlot, Ike and Mike to help us reduce the overgrowth of mugwort, poison ivy, and a mess of tangled weeds and vines. All 4 goats came ready to work as soon as they got off the truck. The NCNC campers who greeted them were fascinated by the the goats’ ability to stand on their hind legs to reach their leafy breakfast.

The goats are part of our multi-year land management plan. Our goal is to eliminate invasive plants without using chemical herbicides. We will then plant native species to support our all-important pollinators!  Studies have shown that goats are effective because they can access areas that humans and machinery cannot and they destroy about 99% of the seeds they consume, which reduces the spread of invasive plants.  Using goats for invasive plant reduction and removal will take several years, and we are happy to welcome back our chew crew for their second year.

Please come see them at work in the north field near the apple orchard.  They are friendly and love an audience!
