In recent years, their numbers have grown so much that they now live close to people. Dan Bogan, Ph.D. will help attendees better understand the behavior and benefits of the eastern coyote and to empower our community with the tools, information and resources we require to coexist with this misunderstood predator. John Benson is a wildlife research biologist currently modeling population dynamics and behavior of mountain lions and bobcats in the Santa Monica Mountains as part of a collaborative study with the National Park Service and UCLA. John earned his Ph.D. studying hybridization dynamics between wolves and coyotes in central Ontario. Before beginning his Ph.D. he studied the highly endangered Florida panther as a research scientist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  As a master’s student John led field operations for a reintroduction effort with federally threatened Louisiana black bears. This involved capturing females and their newborn cubs in tree dens and releasing them in areas of suitable habitat where they had been extirpated.  John did his undergraduate degree in wildlife at Humboldt State University in northern California and previously worked on studies with sea birds, red foxes, Polar bears, Canada lynx, and mountain lions before starting graduate school.

William Berloni On Ethics in Animal Training for Entertainment and Throwing Broadway to Wolves, Oops, We Mean Dogs!
Date:
June 27, 2016

Time:  6:30PM
Fee:   $20 per person

The Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) is pleased to present honorary Tony award-winning William Berlonifor a special talk about ethics in animal training for Entertainment and throwing Broadway to the wolves, oops, we mean dogs!

For more than 30 years, Berloni and his company have been training animals for the stage.  Berloni primarily takes animals rescued from shelters and prepares them for a life in the limelight using his pioneering humane training techniques. Behind the scenes, Berloni has been a major part of successful Broadway shows including Annie, the Wizard of Oz, Legally Blond, and most recently Ivo van Hove’s scary-brilliant revival of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible!” Last year, the Discovery Family Channel changed things up by pulling back the curtain to showcase Berloni himself in 'From Wags to Riches!”

Berloni will share some heartfelt stories and introduce WCC guests to the latest four-legged Broadway sensation - Luchta - the breathtaking beast of the “The Crucible” that has had theater goers wondering if Broadway was thrown to the wolves! Luchta is an 18-month-old Tamaskan, a relatively new and rare breed of dog that can pass for wolves even though there is no wolf content in them at all. Berloni will talk about Luchta success in “The Crucible” and how this special breed has enabled him to bring wolf conservation into the spotlight.

After the talk, guests will visit Ambassador Wolves Atka, Alawa, Nikai and Zephyr. Wine and cheese will be served.  Pre-registration is required.  Information and registration are available at www.nywolf.org.
