Four John Jay Middle School students, ranging from grades six to eight, showed their knowledge of mathematics during the Westchester/Putnam MathCounts competition at Pace University in Pleasantville on Feb. 6.
“We were one of 17 schools competing and did well, placing fifth,” said teacher James Egler, the school’s math curriculum leader, who co-advises the team along with Rosemarie Colaizzi. “We have been preparing for this competition, which entails mostly abstract mathematics problem-solving, by going through practice problems and collaborating on solutions on a weekly basis since October of last year.”
Team members Matthew Collins, Stone Fenton, Jonathan Frantz and Raymond Zhou will continue to compete in area competitions this year. Next up, a larger group will travel to Manhattan College on March 7 to compete in the MoMathelon.
“We will be looking to defend our two-time championship there,” said Egler.
