Recently the Town of North Castle Police Department has received several reports of black bear sightings in residential neighborhoods in Armonk. Residents should know that, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, black bears are transient occupants of Westchester County. They are most often not dangerous to humans, however if they become conditioned to human presence, or feel threatened they can become so. If you see a bear, do not approach it. If possible remain indoors, or in a safe location, until it leaves the area. If at any time you feel threatened or feel that a bear is not acting normally, call the Police Department at 914-273-9500 or 911 immediately.
Black bears at this time of year spend most of their time searching for food. Residents can make their property less attractive to them by removing any food sources such as bird feeders, or dirty barbecue grills, and by securing all trash containers.
