The Hispanic Society of America is a cultural secret in NYC, Washington Heights. Located at the corner or 155th st. and Broadway, it is a massive complex of stone and wrought iron gates. There are no obvious signs outside, but inside is where the display grabs your attention.
The collections of the Hispanic Society are unparalleled in their scope and quality outside the Iberian Peninsula, addressing nearly every aspect of culture in Spain, as well as a large part of Portugal and Latin America through the twentieth century. There, you will view paintings by El Greco, Goya, Velasquez, Murillo, Sorolla and more in a very interesting gallery space together with religious artifacts.
The museum is off the beaten track, far from the standard locations of Manhattan institutions but it is well worth the trip. The venue is quiet and unhurried and admission is free all year round. View the present collection at this link.
