Town of Greenwich Celebrates Completion of Wesskum Wood Road Bridge with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Greenwich, CT, November 20, 2024 – The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works (DPW) celebrated the successful completion of the Wesskum Wood Road Bridge project today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Binney Park, adjacent to the newly constructed bridge.
The Wesskum Wood Road Bridge, originally built in 1950, required a full replacement due to significant wear and tear. In addition to the bridge replacement, the project introduced several enhancements to improve safety, accessibility, and aesthetics. Notable upgrades include:
- Decorative crosswalks
- A sidewalk along the bridge interior
- A path connecting to the Binney Park trail
- ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
- A widened roadway shoulder to better accommodate bicyclists
The new design preserves the original aesthetic by utilizing natural stones with deep joints and a flat capstone, seamlessly blending with the park's scenic surroundings. Additionally, new landscaping harmonizes the bridge with Binney Park's natural beauty.
The construction plans were prepared by Stantec of New Haven, CT, and the primary contractor was A. Vitti of Stamford, CT. Project oversight was provided by Town of Greenwich DPW staff, including:
- Gabriella Circosta Cohee, P.E., Chief Engineer
- Finton Sweeney, Civil Engineer I
The Wesskum Wood Road Bridge project demonstrates the Town’s commitment to improving public infrastructure while preserving historic charm and enhancing safety and connectivity for road and park users alike.
