Carmel Schools Superintendent Andy Irvin has announced that he will be resigning as superintendent. He notified the School Board of his decision last week. He has been with the school district for 12 years.
Irvin’s formal resignation will be at the Tuesday, June 23 Board of Education Meeting and the Board is expected to accept it. He started his career in Carmel as an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in 2008.
Mr. Irvin sent an email to the community on Monday in which he blasted social media posts that used his likeness to impersonate him and included "racially insensitive and sexually insensitive" material.
"Some just plain disgusting posts that make me sick to my stomach," Irvin wrote. "The Twitter account is not my account and the posts are not mine. It is unfortunate that these posts are being brought to light at a time after I have informed them (the Board of Education) and community of my intention to resign my position." He continued "I have made many mistakes in my career and in my life but these are not among them." "I have made many mistakes in my career and in my life but these are not among them," Irvin wrote. "I am sorry that someone felt and continues to feel the need to drive wedges within the CCCSD community and I am sorry that those insensitive messages are being circulated at all."
In addition, Irvin's resignation comes as the district decides how to deal with teacher Krista Berardi’s insensitive and racial remarks on social media that came to light last week. Berardi was also a Brewster Board of Education Trustee. She resigned her post on the Board of Education last Friday night.
Mr. Irvin has not announced what his future holds at this time.
