The world's largest bottle cork sculpture of the Twin Towers in the Guinness World Records was unveiled on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Italian American Club of Mahopac.
The sculpture was created by Gaetano Carbone from Mahopac, New York and was made with recycled bottle corks. It measures 4 ft by 2.99 ft by 11.75 ft and it represents Gaetano's own depiction of the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center as a tribute to the fallen Towers. Gaetano Carbone is an Italian-American living in Mahopac, NY. He was born in 1956, in Bitonto, near the city of Bari, Italy. In 2001, when the Twin Towers were destroyed in the terrorist attack, Gaetano wanted to contribute to its memory by rebuilding them in miniature. Having collected many corks, Gaetano decided to use those for the construction of the project. In 2015 he completed the sculpture which then was accepted in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Gaetano plans to tour the sculpture around the US in an effort to raise additional funds for the Tuesday’s Children organization and he hopes it will eventually be accepted by the NY’s World Trade Center Museum as its final place.
