Family, Friends, Town Mourn Inspiring Mother of Three

One of Bethel's most inspiring and widely loved residents, Deborah Gillette Hermansen, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 14, after a 7-year battle with breast cancer.

Debbie was well known for being an ever-present mom and active member of the community and her church. Even through her own struggles, she participated in Relay for Life year after year, raising over $4,300 for the American Cancer Society. With her family, she hosted events from the former Bethel Newcomers & Neighbors club, and coordinated sponsorship of less fortunate families over the holidays.

Debbie was seen often at her children's extracurricular and school functions, rooting for them, as a member of the audience, and as a volunteer. She frequented Bethel's local businesses and came out to support many of the town's charities on a regular basis.

Hundreds of friends, relatives and neighbors marveled at Debbie's strength, and followed her updates on Live Strong's Lotsa Helping Hands, finding hope and inspiration in her determination and cheerful demeanor. The Hermansens also shared their story as part of Sun Chips Sharing Courage campaign.

Debbie is survived by her husband, son, and two daughters, as well as her parents, sisters, extended family and countless friends. A memorial service will take place on Saturday morning, Aug. 27 at First Congregational Church. For details, friends and neighbors are encouraged to request access to the family's Lotsa Helping Hands site.

Links to any official, public announcement or obituary by the family will be posted here as they become available.
