Parents fear it, students dread it, and -- as recent cheating scandals confirm -- some will do anything to avoid it.  College entrance exams, better known as the SAT and ACT, raise questions well before the first pencil is sharpened.  Chief among them:  which test is easier?

“Surprisingly, there is usually very little difference in a particular student’s scores on the SAT vs. the ACT,” says Maria Markus, director of Ridgefield’s Tutoring Club.   “Some do benefit from taking one over the other, but for most, the issue is whether they’re more comfortable with a problem-solving test or one that is content-based.”

To determine if one format better suits a given student, Ms. Markus recommends starting with a thorough evaluation, and she will offer a complimentary Diagnostic Testing Session on Sunday, February 12 at 10 A.M.  “The test will show a student’s strengths and weaknesses and allow us to propose a plan for success on college entrance exams and beyond,” she explains.

If students decide to enroll in an SAT/ACT Preparation Course at the Tutoring Club, it will be tailored to the individual.  “Rather than focusing on a rigid script, we offer a 16-hour interactive program of small group sessions, test-taking strategies, and practice work, allowing students to gain confidence by focusing on the areas where they need to improve.”

Tutoring Club tutors have college degrees, teaching experience, and in-depth knowledge of the high school curriculum.  Ms. Markus has seen the difference that makes for students. “With preparation, they can succeed, whether or not they have been motivated in the past,” she says.

The Tutoring Club is at 431 Main Street, adjacent to the CVS parking lot along the driveway between Toy Chest and Lucy’s.  For more information, or to register for the January 22nd or February 12th test, call 203-438-1128.
