Fleet Week 2011 Sails into New York Today

Fleet Week 2011 will feature more than 3,000 visitors from the world's greatest military force who will dock on Staten Island -- and they don't plan to disappoint. Visiting members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard will be a part of the fun and activities slated for the 24th annual Fleet Week New York, which starts today, May 25th and continues through Wednesday, June 1st.

This annual event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness first hand the latest capabilities of today's Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Team. Fleet Week includes dozens of military demonstrations and displays throughout the week, as well as public visitation of many of the participating ships.

Here is a calendar of events (all events are at the home port unless otherwise stated):

May 25, 8:30 a.m. to noon

The Parade of Ships is scheduled to pass under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge between 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m., and will later dock at the former Stapleton home port. 

May 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ships will be open for public tours with military displays on the pier. Tours include visits by schoolchildren during the early morning hours. At 11 a.m., the Blessing of the Fleet will be given by Monsignor James Dorney. 

May 27, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ships will be open for public tours with military displays on the pier. Tours include visits by schoolchildren during the early morning hours. From 1 to 1:30 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard will conduct a search-and-rescue demonstration. 

May 28, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ships will be open for public tours with military displays on the pier. At 9 a.m., a special meet-and-greet for Boy and Girl Scout troops will be held. 
From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Northeast Navy Pops Ensemble will perform in Tappen Park, located at 111 Canal St. 
Also from noon to 5 p.m., the Fleet Week Music Festival will feature live bands. 

May 29, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ships will be open for public tours with military displays on the pier. 
10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.: NYC Blood Center will sponsor a blood drive at the pier.
11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., U.S. Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Helicopter Demonstration. 
Noon to 5 p.m., Fleet Week Music Festival 

May 30, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ships will be open for public tours with military displays on the pier. 
From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Task Force Demonstration will be held at Clove Lakes Park. Noon to 2 p.m., U.S. Navy members will participate in the Staten Island Memorial Day Parade along Forest Avenue. 

May 31, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ships will be open for public tours with military displays on the pier. Early morning tours will include visits by schoolchildren. 
10:30 a.m. to noon: U.S. Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Helicopter Demonstration 

June 1, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
