Ridgefield's 2011 Search Institute survey results are in, and the data on alcohol and drug use among our high school kids is disturbing.
Research has shown that the seeds of drug and alcohol abuse are sown long before high school, so what you do with your kids now can make a huge difference. If you are like most of us who are parents of tweens or teens, you are sometimes at a loss as to how to help your increasingly independence-minded child navigate the challenges of early adolescence; and, perhaps most particularly, how to avoid the emerging temptations of drinking, drug use, and casual sex.
For the past several years the Ridgefield Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (RCCASA) has sponsored workshops for 5th and 7th grade parents (known as “TIPP”) aimed at creating a parenting culture in Ridgefield that fosters healthy development and decreases risky behavior.
This year we are opening this program to all parents who believe they could benefit or contribute, and hope you will attend. We’ll address question such as:
How do I talk with my child about alcohol and drugs?
In today’s Facebook world, how do I counter peer influence?
How do I communicate with a child who gives one-word answers?
How do I set and enforce effective limits in an environment of privilege and permissiveness?
Groups will be convening on the following dates, and we hope you will join us.
Mornings (10:00-11:30): January 23, 30, February 6 or February 15, 22, 29 or March 5, 12, 19
Evenings (7:30-9:00): December 1, 8, 15 or January 5, 12, 19 or February 23, March 1, 8
