The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.
This October, Barlow Mountain Elementary School (BMES) was honored with a HUSSC Bronze Award. BMES has embraced the district's wellness policy and worked collaboratively with Chartwells, their food services provider, to improve the wellness of their students. It is a wonderful accomplishment for the BMES students, faculty and food services staff, along with the School District and the state of Connecticut.
Thanks go to the Wellness Committee with special thanks to Shirley Hughes, the Physical Education Teacher, for her leadership efforts in this area.
BMES is the first, and only school, in the district to be recognized. If you wish to see other award winners in the State, click HERE.
