Upcoming Parent Forums: Helping Teens Survive and Thrive

The 2011 Search Institute survey results are in, and our kids have given us a disturbing report card. Only 30% of our high school students report that they have positive adult role models. Only 48% say that their parents strongly discourage alcohol use. A majority of our kids make clear that they are experiencing a climate of permissiveness and a lack of clear boundaries at home, at school, and in the community.

If you are like most parents, you are sometimes at a loss as to how to help your independence-minded teenage son or daughter navigate the challenges of the high school years; and, perhaps most particularly, how to avoid the inevitable temptations of social drinking, drug use, and casual sex.

The Ridgefield Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (RCCASA) is sponsoring a series of parent forums aimed at creating a parenting culture in Ridgefield that fosters healthy development and decreases risky behavior. Through a facilitated, small-group discussion format, you will be able to share your experience and ideas with other parents and tap into the knowledge of invited guest experts.

The first of these forums will use the recent survey results as a jumping off point for exploring what we can do as concerned parents and citizens to protect our teens.
