Although the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation Mother’s Day Luncheon was a few weeks ago, the volunteer board of twelve passionate parents and therapists are still fundraising, and need help with their “Special Project.”  Each year, the Foundation tries to fulfill as many requests as possible, and are proud to have helped over 50 families ~ most have become like their own family, but each year, there’s one request that is too big, too emotional, something that everyone agrees ~ must be fulfilled!

This year, the Foundation is working to provide a wheelchair accessible van for a three-year girl, Millianna, who was born with spina bifida.  Millianna mother, a registered nurse, is struggling to support her, her twin brother and a six-year old sister. She has not been able to work due to the time required to care for Millianna and her two siblings; and she has no family in the area to help with childcare and support.

Millianna developed many complications associated with her birth defect that have required numerous surgeries. These complications included seizures, diabetes insipudus, lateral hip dysplasia, weakness in her trunk and lower extremities, and hydrocephalus. She is unable to walk and utilizes a Quickie wheelchair, a very heavy piece of equipment. The wheelchair must be lifted back and forth in the trunk of their Nissan Pathfinder. Millianna is forced to ride a car seat not designed for someone with a spinal condition and as a result, trips in the car cause a great deal of discomfort. She is, therefore, limited to very short trips, and it makes it difficult for her to travel with her siblings on any family outings.

This year, the Foundation’s “special project” is to provide their family with a wheelchair accessible van where Millianna can be transported comfortably.  The Foundation is working with an organization that sells new and used handicapped vans, and are looking into potentially buying a used van in good condition with low mileage.

The fundraising goals have not been met and individuals who wish to contribute may send a check to: P.O. Box 15, Ridgefield, CT 06877 (please indicate that you would like your donation to go towards the van purchase).  To learn more, click HERE for their website, or contact, Debbie Haughney, (203) 438-3371.

Some previous “special projects” have included special wheel chairs, bathroom renovations, and tuition to a camp for hemiplegics.
