On Thursday, January 12th, from 6 pm to 8:30 pm, master the technology and basic techniques required to add dimension to a wood panel at Makers Night at the Aldrich Comtemporary Art Museum. Ridgefield custom-woodworker Clifford Moran will show participants how to design an image, transfer it to sapelli wood (African mahogany) and then carve geometric textures by using carving gouges, chisels, and veiners. The resulting piece can be used for papermaking, printing, or as a butter mold. The cost of this event is $20 for members, $30 for non-members. To register online, click HERE.
Moran has been creating custom woodwork and furniture in the Connecticut and New York area since 1982. He has a BFA in Industrial Design from Rhode Island School of Design, with an emphasis on furniture design. He studied with Tage Frid, John Dunnigan, and Alphonse Matia, among others. His designs tend toward a modern take on linear Arts and Crafts styles with some Scandinavian influences.
Makers Night, The Aldrich’s do-it yourself workshop series, offers informal, creative experiences for artisans at all levels of ability. The sessions emphasize observation, process, and discussion through diverse art-making activities, in a social environment.
Materials are included in the fee and refreshments will be provided.
Note: Please be aware that woodworking is a potentially hazardous pastime.
