The Ridgefield Library presents: What the Dickens!

There are still opportunities to honor and celebrate 200th birthday of the great Charles Dickens!
The Ridgefield Library is joining a worldwide celebration of the life and work of author Charles Dickens with a four-month series of programs and events called What the Dickens! A multi-part lecture, film and book discussion series celebrating the bicentennial of Charles Dickens' birth. Programs run through March and include the following:
Film Screenings and Discussions:
Mark Edwards, Media Studies Dept. at Sacred Heart University, will return to lead Saturday morning film screenings and discussions of the following classics: Oliver Twist (1948) on Jan. 7, David Copperfield (1935) on Feb. 11 and Great Expectations (1946) on March 10. All screenings begin at 10 AM in the Dayton Program Room.
Lecture Series:
Also back by popular demand is Dr. Mark Schenker, Senior Associate Dean of Yale College. He will present a three-part evening lecture series called From Oliver to David to Pip: A Survey of Dickens' Development as a Novelist. Part one, (Oliver Twist) will take place on Thursday, Jan. 12 - register, part two (David Copperfield) will take place on Thursday, Feb. 16 - register, and part three (Great Expectations) will take place on Thursday, March 15 - register. Lectures run from 7 to 8 PM.
Book Discussions:
Each lecture will be followed by book discussions: Oliver Twist on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 10 AM and 7 PM, David Copperfield on Wednesday, Feb 22 at 10 AM and 7 PM and Great Expectations on Thursday, March 22 at 1 PM and 7 PM. Additional discussions will include American Notes for General Circulation on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7 PM, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood on Thursday, March 1 at 1 PM. The Reading Is a Family Affair program for children in grades 3 to 6 and their parents will focus on The Cheshire Cheese Cat: A Dickens of a Tale on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 6PM. Please register in the Children's Department for the Family Affair program and pick up your free book thanks to the Friends of the Library. Registration is not required for the other book discussions. Multiple copies of the selected texts are available upstairs in the Fiction Room - or you can purchase a copy at a 15% discount at Books on the Common.
