Sunday Liquor Sales in CT to Go Into Action This Sunday, May 20

Thursday, May 17 -- This past week, Connecticut Governor Malloy officially signed the landmark Bill #5021 into law. This new law will allow for alcohol sales on Sundays in the state beginning this Sunday May 20, from 10am-5pm, and add a few other provisions to the existing laws.

Local Fairfield beer, wine and liquor distributors, like Harry's Wine & Liquor Market, will begin putting these hours into their regular weekly rotations.

On Harry's Blog site, a spokesperson for the retailer issued the following statement. "We have heard good points made on both sides of the argument and will continue to keep our eyes, ears, and minds open to new ideas regarding these changes. As a fixture in the industry for more than 70 years, Harry's has seen and, many times, led the way through all types of changes. As we embark on our new adventure into uncharted waters, we invite your feedback and hope that our customers will let us know what their particular needs are moving forward."

Mo Ambrahamson, co-owner of Mo's Wines & Spirits, suggested that while being open on Sunday may be a convenience for customers, it would likely not increase sales for the retailer and, in fact, would add costs and liabilty in terms of operating and staffing for the extra day. Ambrahamson said an anchored establishment that enjoys steady store traffic like hers can likely absorb the added costs but that tough times may lay ahead for smaller package stores, particularly those not located along other state borders. Before the new law, some Connecticut residents in border towns were crossing the borders, into New York in particular, to purchase liquor on Sundays.
