Dr. Shareef Jandali is a noted local plastic surgeon and regular contributor to Fairfield's HamletHub. Today, Dr. Jandali offers five excellent self-care tips to help prevent wrinkles around the eyes.
1) Wear sunglasses – this is probably the easiest one. Buy a large and wide pair of sunglasses that act as a physical barrier to block UV rays from the skin around your eyes. This will also help prevent you from squinting, which causes crow’s feet to form around the eyes over time.
2) Avoid sun and use a high SPF moisturizer – this one is the basic tenet of skin care. UV damage causes the skin to age by thinning the collagen and causing cellular damage, leading to wrinkles. Excessive sun exposure can also lead to skin cancer, which is difficult to reconstruct on the face. Scars will likely be visible and there isn’t much loose skin to move around to reconstruct after removal of any cancer spots.
3) Stop smoking – this one is a no-brainer. It thins the collagen in the skin and causes it to lose its elasticity.
4) Stay hydrated – drinking a healthy amount of water daily will flush out toxins and metabolites while keeping the skin hydrated and plump.
5) Botox the crow’s feet – this works wonders. Botox should only be injected in small amounts on the sides of the eyes. This helps weaken the circular muscle around the eye that causes the formation of crow’s feet after years of repetitive action.
