May is Water Safety Month: Some Tips for Keeping Children Safe

May has been designated National Water Safety Month. Area Family Y facilities are encouraging kids and adults to have fun in and around the water but to always make safety their first priority. The Y recommends the following safety tips for children and adults:

- Only swim when and where there is lifeguard on duty; never swim alone.

- Adults should constantly watch children in and near the water. If multiple adults are in the vicinity, designate a “water watcher” so everyone knows who is “on duty.”

- Inexperienced swimmers should take precaution and wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD) when in, on or around the water.

- Children who are beginners should stay within arm's reach of an adult in the water

Dr. Shareef Jandali: Easily Corrected Inverted Nipples

Local plastic surgeon Dr. Shareef Jandali is a regular contributor to Fairfield HamletHub. This week, he talks about inverted nipples, an often embarrassing yet quite easily correctable condition...

Inverted nipples are actually quite common.  Various studies have shown that up to 10% of women have inverted nipples.  This condition can be unilateral (one side) or bilateral (both sides).  I frequently see this in young women in their twenties who have noticed the condition since breast development in their teens.  It can cause feelings of self-consciousness and embarrassment.  I also see this condition in women who have tried breast feeding, but have had difficulty with the infant latching onto the inverted nipple.  This can often be overcome with pumping the breast before breast feeding, which will cause the nipple to protrude.  However, depending on the grade of inversion, this may not even be possible.  There is a grading scale of 1 to 3 for inverted nipples.  Grade 1 means that the nipple can be easily everted with manual pressure or stimulation (touch or cold temperature).  Grade 2 means it is moderately difficult to evert the nipple and it retracts spontaneously.  Grade 3 means that it is severely difficult and almost impossible to evert the nipple.  The cause of this condition is thought to be from congenitally shortened ductal elements behind the nipple that cause a tethering effect, pulling the nipple inward.

Not only can inverted nipples cause self-consciousness and embarrassment, but they can also lead to irritation and inflammation around the nipple due to difficulties in hygiene.  Surgical correction involves a few very small incisions around the nipple to allow release and stretching of the tethered fibrous bands.  Also, the base of the nipple is tightened slightly to keep the nipple protruded and everted.  Care is taken to not completely divide the milk ducts in young women who plan on breastfeeding in the future.  Women are often relieved to hear that this condition can be corrected by a minor office procedure with local anesthesia.

Fairfield Library Offers Talks on Fatigue and Cholesterol Thursday May 24

On Thursday, May 24, Fairfield Public Library will host two health-oriented talks as part of its Health Matters series. At 10am, the Library presents Karen Drena and "Identify Culprits of your Fatigue." At 7pm (and also on Wed. May 30 at 7pm), Dr. Veronica Waks will lecture about Cholesterol. Both sessions will be held in the Rotary Room of the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road.

In the first talk, Karen Drena will show you how to recharge your inner battery by naturally accessing your body’s innate source of energy.  Learn how herbal remedies, diet and exercise can combat exhaustion, nourish energy, rejuvenate your natural beauty and restore vitality.  There are numerous reasons for being tired apart from the lack of a good night’s sleep.

Drena is a Holistic Health Practitioner certified with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, and a Second Degree Reiki Practitioner.  She is a specialized Bioenergy Practitioner and holds a B.S. in Holistic Health and is a graduate of the Global College of Natural Medicine.

At the 7pm lecture, Dr. Waks will discuss high cholesterol, LDL, HDL, homocysteine, C-reactive protein and other markers of cholesterol, and the false promise of cholesterol-lowering drugs.  She will explain how to lower your serum cholesterol using specific foods, nutritional supplements and exercise.

Dr. Waks is a licensed naturopathic physician, from the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center in Fairfield.  She graduated from the University of Bridgeport’s College of Naturopathic Medicine. As a naturopathic physician, she combines a contemporary naturopathic approach to healing with the keen insights of a medical doctor. Prior to earning her doctorate in naturopathic medicine, she received her MD degree from the Vladivostok Medical University and practiced internal medicine and family medicine. Upon her arrival in the United States Dr. Waks passed her United States Medical License Exams and obtained a United States Foreign Medical Certificate. While practicing conventional medicine Dr. Waks became concerned about the negative side effects and interactive effects of many standard pharmaceutical treatments, and initiated personal study of natural and alternative treatments. Instead of pursuing a conventional medical career Dr. Waks attended naturopathic medical school and practices as a naturopath.  Dr. Waks is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
