Stamford's Avon Theatre Presents a Night of Film Noir Tuesday May 22

On Tuesday, May 22, at 7:30pm, The Avon Theatre in Stamford presents a Night of Film Noir, showing the 1947 movie "Born to Kill." A post-film Q&A session, conducted by Film Noir maven Michael Kovner, will also be featured. Avon Carte Blanche Members are FREE; Members are $5; Students & Seniors $8; Non-Members $11.

ABOUT THE FILM: Born to Kill (Running Time:  92 mins) was a classic and archetypal film noir movie directed by Robert Wise, who would go on to direct several other movies in the same genre. The notable cast included Claire Trevor who did so many film noir features that she became known as the "Queen of Film Noir," and the controversial Lawrence Tierny, whose extensive film career included Reservoir Dogs.  Director Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sound of Music, West Side Story) shows his film noir chops with this dark gem, whose mix of heiress sisters, stone-hearted men, needy hangers-on and inevitable love plays like a soap opera that refuses to wash itself clean. Walter Slezak portrays the verse-quoting shamus, and Claire Trevor and Lawrence Tierney portray the illicit lovers who play with fire - and burn their names forever into film-noir lore.

ABOUT THE HOST: Michael Kovner is a long-time Greenwich resident and member of the Avon Advisory Board. While he is an accomplished Vice President and Managing Director with the real estate firm Brown Harris Stevens in his professional life, his personal passion is the cinema. An avid Avon supporter and lover of film noir, Michael has watched movies since his early childhood. He can repeat lines in his sleep, and he has probably spent more time in the dark confines of cinemas than anywhere else. His fascination with film noir began at a young age, starting with The Maltese Falcon all the way to Psycho, which he first saw at the Avon. He first saw Born To Kill in Aspen while on a ski trip and was glued to the screen. It has remained an all-time favorite of his ever since, largely a result of the art of the unexpected - the beautiful and elegant Claire Trevor, who plays a rich society woman, but acts as rotten and murderous as any thug with no moral compass - perhaps even more so.  An undergraduate of Lafayette College with postgraduate degrees from Georgetown University and the University of Dijon (France), Michael proudly served as an officer in the US Army, and was posted to the 25th Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam.  He was awarded an ARCOM Medal, Bronze Star and Bronze Star 1st Oak Leaf Cluster.  Michael and his spouse, Jean Doyen de Montaillou, remain active on many boards and institutions, while splitting time between their homes in Greenwich, Palm Beach and Nantucket.

Crossover Band Twiddle to Play FTC Friday May 18

On Friday, May 18, Fairfield Theatre Co. hosts Twiddle, a true crossover band known for their Phish-like jams, following in Zappa and Coltrane footsteps.

Much more than just another jam band from Vermont, Twiddle is a true cross-over band with a sound that weaves and dodges through genres, coasting with complexities that conjure up Coltrane, Ranglin and Zappa, yet still embraces the roots of jam traditions. Spinning tall tales with their lyrics, the words lay on a thick mattress of masterful guitar, bass and keyboard solos.

Fans should never be surprised to find new friends of all ages at a Twiddle show, whether they’re fans of the Talking Heads, Phish or any other high caliber live show. High-energy shows can flow on for hours with Twiddle, always eager to please and explore new musical boundaries and share the energy with the crowd.

Even though any Twiddle fan would jump fast to say the band is best experienced live – and they are correct – their most recent album, Somewhere on the Mountain, was funded almost entirely by fan donations on Kickstarter.com and features some of the best, most authentic recordings of the band yet. But if you’re a live show purist, you can always buy tickets to the May 18 show at StageOne.

“The band’s intricate, complex compositions cut notes with precision, and their high-energy, rapid-fire playing keeps fans doing way more than just fiddling about – rather, their collective sweaty soles are kept stirring, keeping pace with every blast, every roar, every ascension into sweet jam heaven.” – High Times
